Share Your Piece of the Pie!

Day 143  May 24, 2013

“Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness; it has no taste.”   ― Charlotte Brontë

Gooseberry Pie A little bit sweet and a whole lot sassy!

“Make something in which the sense of taste is the essential component.”  -from 365 A Daily Creativity Journal by Noah Scalin

Gooseberry Pie….yes, there really ARE gooseberries!  I know because my mom’s gooseberry pie was served at every family gathering, and my dad grew bushes of them….everywhere!  He loved growing them because the birds and other critters stayed away and he would always be assured of a bumper crop of berries.  The thorns on the bushes created a barrier and the tart taste of the berries made them a less than desirable snack for the birds.  But after careful harvesting through the thorns, tediously removing the stems and tops, adding loads of sugar and other pie making ingredients Dad’s berries became a piece of heaven on a plate!  There is nothing to compare with the taste.   Sweet and tangy and tart are all rolled into each mouth full.  And Mom knew how to combine it all to perfection.  And no one would ever think of sharing even a bite!

I confess that sometimes I am that way with things other than my mom’s pie.  Things that were meant to be shared I often hold tight.  Maybe it is something I had to make my way through the brambles and thorns of life to get.  Or perhaps the cost for me to acquire it was tedious time and attention.  Or perhaps I think what I have is just is too good, too tasty, too sweet to share.

This isn’t the way of the Kingdom of God though.  Scriptures tell us that there is enough for all if we are willing to share what we have with others. Life is so much richer and divine when we share all of it…the sweet, the tangy, the thorny, the bitter…. with others.  Ruth Reichl, food writer and editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine says it well:

“Pull up a chair.  Take a taste.  Come join us.  Life is so endlessly delicious.”
