A Cup of Hope
I made this cup
from a piece of wood from a tree in my back yard
cut down some time ago.

“Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness…” -2 Corinthians 3:12

“Work with nature.  Go to your yard or nearby park and collect materials to work with.” -from 365 A Daily Creativity Journal by Noah Scalin

The Springfield Community of Christ church building sits near a beautiful lake.  There is a footpath that goes all the way around it and sometimes I go to this “back yard” to walk, to think, to meditate and talk with God.  There, I have a special place…a tree of hope.  Someone, a long time ago inscribed the word “Hope” into the bark of the tree and others have come along and added their own inscriptions of various sorts.  But it is that one word that can keep me going, like a pat on the back, a healing touch, or a cool drink of water along the way.  People need that at times to remind them that in the midst of cold sorrow, buried in the deepest despair there is a hope waiting to blossom forth.

“For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.  Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant.”  -Job14:7-9

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.”  -Romans 12:12
